HEVC stands for High Efficiency Video Coding, a file format abbreviation.

MPEG name for the H.265 video compression standard, offering about twice the efficiency of H.264. Apple devices record HEVC video by default, and it underpins 4K HDR streaming and Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Example: Windows needs the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store to play iPhone videos.

Usage notes

HEVC supports 10-bit color and HDR formats such as HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Apple adopted it with iOS 11 in 2017 for both video and HEIC photos. Because of licensing costs, Microsoft charges a small fee for its HEVC extension, and browser support arrived late and often depends on hardware decoding.
