1. Incident Command System

Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations · also used in medicine

Standardized management structure for emergencies that defines roles such as incident commander, operations, planning, logistics and finance, so responders from different agencies can work together. ICS scales from a single car crash to national disasters.

Example: The county used ICS for the flood response, with the fire chief as incident commander.

ICS grew out of FIRESCOPE, a California program created after devastating wildfires in 1970. It is part of NIMS and is required for US agencies receiving federal preparedness funds. ICS is also used internationally and in private industry.

2. Inhaled corticosteroid

Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations

Anti-inflammatory steroid delivered to the airways by inhaler, including fluticasone, budesonide, beclomethasone, mometasone and ciclesonide. It is the foundation of long-term asthma control and is added for some COPD patients.

Example: ICS budesonide 180 mcg 2 puffs BID; rinse and spit after each use.

Because only a small fraction is absorbed systemically, inhaled steroids avoid most oral steroid side effects, but oral thrush and hoarseness are common unless the mouth is rinsed. Doses are grouped as low, medium or high and differ between products. Budesonide has the most safety data in pregnancy, and ciclesonide is a prodrug activated in the lungs.

3. Intercostal space

Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations

Gap between two adjacent ribs, containing intercostal muscles, nerves and vessels; each space is numbered for the rib above it. ICS landmarks locate heart sounds, chest tube insertion sites and needle decompression points.

Example: Chest tube placed in the right 5th ICS, midaxillary line.

Needles and tubes pass just above the lower rib because the intercostal vein, artery and nerve run along the underside of each rib. The second right ICS beside the sternum is the classic aortic valve listening area. In respiratory medicine ICS means inhaled corticosteroid, an unrelated term.

4. iCalendar file

Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations

Standard calendar data file used to share events, meeting invitations and calendar subscriptions between Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar and other apps. Clicking an ICS file adds the event to the user's calendar.

Example: Click the ICS attachment to add the webinar to your calendar with the correct time zone.

The iCalendar format was defined in RFC 2445 in 1998 and updated by RFC 5545 in 2009. Email meeting invitations contain iCalendar data, which is how calendars recognize and accept them. Subscribing to an ICS address, sometimes shown with a webcal:// prefix, keeps a calendar such as a sports schedule automatically updated.
