GXT stands for Graded exercise test, a cardiology abbreviation.
Exercise stress test in which workload increases in stages, on a treadmill or bicycle, while ECG, blood pressure and symptoms are recorded. It is used to diagnose coronary disease, measure exercise capacity, prescribe cardiac rehabilitation and evaluate exercise-induced arrhythmias.
Example: GXT before starting the cardiac rehab program showed a functional capacity of 7 METs.
Usage notes
GXT and ETT are often used interchangeably, though GXT also covers cycle ergometer tests and exercise physiology research. Adding breath-by-breath gas analysis turns it into a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). Tests are stopped for limiting symptoms, significant ST changes, a falling blood pressure or arrhythmias.
