CategoriesMedical

HFimpEF stands for Heart failure with improved ejection fraction, a cardiology abbreviation.

Category for patients whose ejection fraction was once 40 percent or lower and has since risen by at least 10 points to above 40 percent, often after medical therapy, revascularization or treatment of a cause such as tachycardia. Guidelines advise continuing heart failure medicines because stopping them can lead to relapse.

Example: LVEF recovered from 30% to 52% after rhythm control, so the problem list now reads HFimpEF.

Usage notes

Introduced by the 2021 Universal Definition of Heart Failure and adopted in the 2022 ACC/AHA/HFSA guideline. The TRED-HF trial (2019) showed that many patients with recovered dilated cardiomyopathy relapsed within months of medication withdrawal, which is why HFimpEF is treated as remission rather than cure. Some papers write HFrecEF for "recovered" EF.
