CPET stands for Cardiopulmonary exercise test, a respiratory abbreviation.
Exercise test on a bicycle or treadmill with breath-by-breath gas analysis, ECG and blood pressure monitoring, measuring peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) and identifying whether exercise is limited by the heart, lungs, muscles or deconditioning.
Example: CPET: peak VO2 11.8 mL/kg/min, ventilatory efficiency abnormal; consistent with advanced heart failure.
Usage notes
Peak VO2 is used to list patients for heart transplantation, typically at 14 mL/kg/min or less, or 12 or less if taking beta-blockers. CPET helps evaluate unexplained breathlessness, assess risk before lung resection and major surgery, and guide exercise prescriptions. It is also called cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) in some labs.
