1. Fractional flow reserve

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Pressure-wire measurement during cardiac catheterization comparing the pressure beyond a narrowing with the pressure in the aorta during maximal blood flow induced by adenosine. A value of 0.80 or lower indicates that the stenosis limits flow enough to benefit from stenting.

Example: FFR of the intermediate LAD lesion 0.76; lesion stented.

The FAME trial (2009) showed that guiding PCI by FFR rather than by angiographic appearance alone reduced adverse events and stent use. It is particularly helpful for "intermediate" lesions narrowing the artery by roughly 40 to 70 percent. CT-derived FFR estimates the same value noninvasively from a coronary CT angiogram.

2. Federal funds rate

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Interest rate at which US banks lend reserve balances to one another overnight, the main policy rate set by the Federal Reserve as a target range. Changes in the fed funds rate ripple through to mortgage, credit card, loan and savings rates.

Example: The Fed raised the FFR target range to 5.25-5.50 percent in July 2023, a 22-year high.

The effective federal funds rate (EFFR), a volume-weighted median of actual overnight trades, is published daily by the New York Fed. Since 2008 the Fed has set a 25-basis-point target range rather than a single number, steering rates mainly through the interest it pays on reserves. Most writers say "fed funds rate" rather than FFR.
