1. General practitioner

Medical · Medical Specialty Abbreviations

Physician providing primary care to patients of all ages and the usual first point of contact for health problems in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries. GPs manage common illnesses and long-term conditions, deliver preventive care and refer patients to hospital specialists.

Example: Book a GP appointment if the cough lasts more than three weeks.

In the UK, general practice is a specialty with its own training scheme and Royal College of General Practitioners, and NHS patients register with a GP practice. In the US, "GP" once described doctors who practiced after an internship without residency; that path has largely given way to family medicine. Pronounced as letters.

2. General partner

Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations

Manager of a private equity, venture capital or real estate fund who makes investment decisions, oversees portfolio companies and bears unlimited liability for the partnership's obligations. The GP typically commits 1 to 3 percent of the fund's capital and earns management fees plus carried interest.

Example: The GP has called 60 percent of committed capital and expects to finish investing by next year.

In practice the GP is usually a special-purpose entity controlled by the fund manager, which limits the principals' personal exposure. Carried interest is commonly 20 percent of profits above a preferred return of about 8 percent. In accounting, GP more often means gross profit.

3. Gross profit

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations

Revenue minus cost of goods sold, showing how much money a company makes from its products or services before operating expenses, interest and taxes. It measures production and pricing efficiency.

Example: GP rose to $63 million on $150 million of revenue, a gross margin of 42 percent.

Gross profit is an absolute amount, while gross margin expresses it as a percentage of revenue. Retailers and manufacturers watch GP per unit and by product line to guide pricing. In private equity GP means general partner, and in the UK it usually means a general practitioner doctor.

4. Games played

Sports · Ice Hockey Abbreviations

Number of games in which a player appears or a team has played, listed first in most statistics tables across hockey, baseball, basketball and other sports. Per-game averages are calculated from it.

Example: Standings: Panthers GP 70, W 44, L 21, OTL 5, PTS 93.

Patrick Marleau holds the NHL record with 1,779 regular-season games, having passed Gordie Howe in 2021. In standings, teams with games in hand have played fewer GP than rivals. Baseball and basketball sometimes use G for games instead. In medicine GP means general practitioner.

5. Grand Prix

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Name for an individual race in Formula One and other series, such as the Monaco Grand Prix, and for events in sports including figure skating, show jumping and cycling. French for "grand prize".

Example: Practice for the Japanese GP was delayed by heavy rain.

The first motor race called a Grand Prix was the 1906 French Grand Prix near Le Mans. The plural is Grands Prix. In hockey and team-sport tables GP means games played instead.

6. General partnership

Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations

Business owned by two or more partners who share profits, management and unlimited personal liability for the partnership's debts. In most US states and in the UK, a general partnership can arise automatically when people carry on a business together for profit, without any filing.

Example: The two founders ran the bakery as a GP for a year before converting it into an LLC.

Each general partner can usually bind the partnership in contracts and is jointly liable for its obligations, which is why many businesses move to LLCs or LLPs. US general partnerships are governed by state law based on the Uniform Partnership Act and are pass-through entities for tax. In private equity, GP more commonly means general partner.

7. Gold pieces

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

In-game currency unit, notably in Dungeons & Dragons, where prices are listed in gold pieces, and in RuneScape, where coins are commonly called "gp."

Example: Selling the enchanted sword for 500 gp at the next town.

D&D also uses copper, silver, electrum and platinum pieces, with 10 silver pieces equal to 1 gp. In RuneScape, "gp" amounts such as "10m gp" are standard trading talk. In Formula One GP means Grand Prix, and in medicine a general practitioner.

8. Guadeloupe

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Guadeloupe, a French overseas region in the Caribbean, consists of a butterfly-shaped main island and smaller islands. Basse-Terre is the capital and Pointe-à-Pitre the largest city.

Example: The rum distillery in GP ships within the EU without customs duties.

Guadeloupe is part of the EU and uses the euro. GP also means general practitioner in British English and Grand Prix in motorsport.
