1. Global warming potential

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps over a period, typically 100 years, relative to the same mass of carbon dioxide, which has a GWP of 1. Under the IPCC's 2021 values, methane has a GWP of about 28-30, nitrous oxide about 273 and sulfur hexafluoride about 25,000.

Example: Refrigerants are being phased down by GWP, so R-410A, at about 2,100, is giving way to lower-GWP alternatives.

Over a 20-year horizon methane's GWP rises to about 80, because it is potent but short-lived; choosing GWP20 or GWP100 therefore changes how important methane cuts appear. Values are updated with each IPCC assessment report. In product labels and regulations, "low-GWP" usually means below about 150.

2. Gift with purchase

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Promotion in which customers receive a free item, such as a cosmetics bag or travel-size products, when they buy a qualifying product or spend above a threshold.

Example: Spend $75 on skincare and receive a seven-piece GWP.

Estée Lauder is widely credited with pioneering gift-with-purchase promotions at department store beauty counters. In insurance, GWP means gross written premium.

3. Gross written premium

Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations

Total premium an insurer writes on policies during a period, before deducting reinsurance and before recognizing it as earned over the policy term. It is the main measure of an insurer's sales volume.

Example: The carrier grew GWP 14% this year, mostly in commercial auto.

Net written premium (NWP) subtracts premium ceded to reinsurers. Earned premium recognizes revenue gradually as coverage time passes. In retail, GWP means gift with purchase.
