VLC stands for VideoLAN Client, a software abbreviation.
Free, open-source media player from the nonprofit VideoLAN project that plays nearly any audio or video file, disc or network stream without extra codecs. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
Example: If the MKV won't play in the default app, open it in VLC.
Usage notes
VLC grew out of a student project at École Centrale Paris that began in 1996 and was released as open source in 2001. Today it is officially called "VLC media player", and its orange traffic-cone icon is widely recognized. Beyond playback, it converts files, records streams and plays partly downloaded media. It has been downloaded billions of times.
