GFR stands for Glomerular filtration rate, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Volume of plasma filtered by the glomeruli of both kidneys per minute, the best overall measure of kidney function. Healthy young adults filter roughly 90 to 120 mL/min per 1.73 m2 of body surface area, and the value declines gradually with age; it underpins the five KDIGO stages of chronic kidney disease (G1 to G5).
Example: A measured GFR with iohexol clearance was arranged before the living kidney donation.
Usage notes
True GFR cannot be read directly from a blood sample. It is measured by clearance of filtered markers such as inulin, the historical gold standard, or iohexol and iothalamate, or estimated from creatinine and cystatin C (eGFR). Stage G3 is split into G3a (45 to 59) and G3b (30 to 44) because risk climbs steeply across that range.
