DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format, a file format abbreviation.
Autodesk CAD format designed for exchanging drawings between AutoCAD and other programs, available in text (ASCII) and binary forms. Laser cutters, CNC routers and plasma cutters commonly accept DXF files.
Example: Send the bracket outline as a DXF and the laser-cutting service will quote it today.
Usage notes
Autodesk introduced DXF with AutoCAD in 1982 and publishes its specification, unlike DWG. Because DXF is documented, almost every CAD, CAM and vector program can read it, although complex entities may convert imperfectly. Units and scale should be checked on import, as DXF files do not always state them clearly.
