1. Emissions trading system

Cap-and-trade market in which a government sets a declining limit on total emissions, issues or auctions allowances up to that cap, and lets companies trade them, so cuts happen where they are cheapest. The EU ETS, launched in 2005, covers power, industry, aviation within Europe and shipping.
Example: Allowance prices under the EU ETS have mostly traded between about 50 and 100 euros per tonne since 2022.
China's national ETS, launched in 2021 for the power sector, covers more emissions than any other market. Other systems include California's cap-and-trade program and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in the northeastern United States. Early EU allowance prices collapsed because of over-allocation, prompting reforms such as the Market Stability Reserve.
2. Expiration term of service

Date on which a service member's enlistment contract ends, after which the member separates unless reenlisting or extending. Army members use it as a noun and verb ("I ETS in May").
Example: Only 60 days until my ETS, and then it's back to college on the GI Bill.
The Marine Corps and Navy use end of active service (EAS) and end of active obligated service (EAOS) for the same idea. Members who leave active duty before completing their eight-year military service obligation usually move into the Individual Ready Reserve. Stop-loss policies have at times delayed ETS during wars.
