LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, an environmental abbreviation.
Widely used green building rating system developed by the US Green Building Council. Projects earn points for energy and water efficiency, materials, indoor air quality and site choices, achieving Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum levels.
Example: The new library achieved LEED Gold with rooftop solar panels and rainwater harvesting.
Usage notes
LEED launched publicly in 2000 after a pilot version in 1998 and is used in more than 180 countries. Ratings exist for new construction, existing buildings, interiors, homes and neighborhoods. Critics have noted that some certified buildings use more energy in practice than predicted, prompting performance-based updates.
