1. Delirium tremens
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Most severe form of alcohol withdrawal, usually beginning 48–96 hours after the last drink, with confusion, agitation, hallucinations, tremor, fever, rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. It is a medical emergency treated with benzodiazepines or phenobarbital, often in intensive care.
Example: Day 3 post-admission, disoriented with visual hallucinations and HR 132: DTs, transfer to ICU.
"Tremens" is Latin for trembling; the plural-looking "DTs" is conventional. Mortality was historically high and remains significant even with modern treatment. Risk factors include prior DTs, withdrawal seizures and heavy daily drinking. Thiamine is given to prevent Wernicke encephalopathy.
2. Digital Theater Systems (DTS)
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Company and family of surround-sound formats used in cinemas, DVDs, Blu-ray discs and home theater systems, including DTS 5.1, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio and object-based DTS:X.
Example: The Blu-ray offers a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track alongside the stereo mix.
DTS debuted with Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park in 1993, synchronizing a CD-ROM soundtrack with the film. It competes with Dolby, and both appear on most Blu-ray discs. The technology company Xperi acquired DTS in 2016. Some TV makers, including LG from 2020, dropped built-in DTS decoding, so discs may need a player or receiver that decodes DTS itself.
