CategoriesTechnology & Computing

DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Industry group and set of guidelines that let TVs, game consoles, phones, PCs and NAS drives share photos, music and video over a home network. Many TVs still list DLNA among their media-sharing features.

Example: Turn on the NAS's DLNA server and the TV will show the movie folder automatically.

Usage notes

Sony and other companies founded the alliance in 2003, basing its guidelines on UPnP networking. The alliance dissolved in 2017, but DLNA-compatible software, such as the Plex and Jellyfin media servers, remains common. Compatibility problems with file formats and subtitles were frequent complaints, and streaming apps have largely replaced DLNA for most users.
