1. Data loss prevention
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
Security tools and policies that detect and block sensitive data, such as card numbers, health records or source code, from leaving an organization through email, uploads, USB drives or cloud apps.
Example: DLP blocked the email because the attachment contained 300 unmasked card numbers.
Products scan content using pattern matching, fingerprints of known documents and classification labels. Strict rules frustrate users and generate false positives, so policies are usually tuned in monitor-only mode first. Generative AI tools opened a new leak channel, prompting DLP controls on chatbot uploads. Also called data leak prevention; in projectors DLP means Digital Light Processing.
2. Digital Light Processing
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Projection technology from Texas Instruments that uses a chip covered in millions of microscopic tilting mirrors, each representing a pixel, to reflect light through a lens. It is used in home theater projectors, business projectors and most digital cinema projectors.
Example: The single-chip DLP projector shows faint rainbow flashes when I move my eyes quickly.
Larry Hornbeck invented the digital micromirror device at Texas Instruments in 1987 and received an Academy Award for it in 2015. Single-chip projectors produce color with a spinning color wheel, which can cause the "rainbow effect" for some viewers, while cinema projectors use three chips. DLP competes with LCD and LCoS projection technologies.
