1. Cascading Style Sheets

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

The style sheet language that controls how HTML is displayed: colors, fonts, spacing, layout, animation and responsive behavior across screen sizes. Rules pair selectors, such as .button or h1, with declarations, such as color: navy.

Example: The button looks different in Safari, so check the CSS for a browser-specific property.

Proposed by Håkon Wium Lie in 1994 while working with Tim Berners-Lee at CERN; CSS level 1 became a W3C Recommendation in December 1996. "Cascading" refers to the rules that decide which style wins when several apply, based on origin, specificity and order. After CSS 2.1 the language was split into separately versioned modules, so "CSS3" is an umbrella term rather than a single release. Flexbox and Grid transformed page layout during the 2010s.

2. Steady-state concentration (Css)

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Drug level reached when the amount entering the body with each dose equals the amount eliminated, so peaks and troughs repeat at the same values. Monitoring is usually done once a drug is at steady state.

Example: Check phenytoin level after reaching Css, about 5-7 days after the dose change.

Steady state takes about four to five half-lives regardless of dose; increasing the dose raises Css but does not reach it faster. Phenytoin is an exception that follows saturable kinetics, so small dose increases can cause large, disproportionate rises in blood levels.
