DOHC stands for Dual overhead camshaft, an automotive abbreviation.

Engine design with two camshafts in each cylinder head, one operating the intake valves and one the exhaust valves, typically with four valves per cylinder. DOHC engines breathe better at high rpm and allow precise variable valve timing.

Example: The 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder makes 180 horsepower and revs to 6,800 rpm.

Usage notes

Also called "twin cam," a term once displayed proudly on engine covers. V-shaped engines with DOHC heads have four camshafts in total. Most modern gasoline engines are DOHC, while older designs used single cams or pushrods. Timing belts or chains drive the camshafts from the crankshaft.
