1. United States Department of Transportation

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Sets safety rules and distributes federal funding for highways, aviation, railroads, transit, pipelines and shipping through agencies such as the FAA, FHWA and NHTSA. It is led by the Secretary of Transportation.

Example: Commercial trucks crossing state lines must display a USDOT number issued under DOT rules.

Created by a 1966 law and opened in April 1967, it consolidated transportation offices previously spread across Commerce and other agencies. Every state also has its own transportation department, often called the state DOT, which builds and maintains state highways. The "DOT" code on tire sidewalls certifies compliance with federal safety standards.

2. Damage over time

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Effect that deals damage repeatedly over a set period, such as poison, burning or bleeding, rather than in a single hit. Also written DoT.

Example: Put your DOTs on the boss before it phases.

DOT-focused classes, such as warlocks in World of Warcraft, apply multiple effects and let them tick. Players track DOT uptime as a performance metric. In US government, DOT means the Department of Transportation.

3. Directly observed therapy

Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations

Strategy in which a health worker watches a patient take each dose of TB medicine, in person or by video, to ensure adherence and prevent drug resistance. It is standard for active TB treatment in many public health programs.

Example: Health department arranged video DOT on weekdays for the 6-month TB regimen.

The WHO promoted the broader DOTS strategy (directly observed treatment, short-course) from the 1990s. Video-observed therapy (VOT or VDOT) has become common since the COVID-19 pandemic. DOT is also used for some HIV and hepatitis C treatment. Outside medicine DOT usually means the Department of Transportation.

4. DNS over TLS (DoT)

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

Encrypts DNS queries with TLS on a dedicated port, 853, protecting lookups from eavesdropping and tampering between a device and its resolver. The Private DNS setting introduced in Android 9 uses DoT.

Example: Set Private DNS to dns.example.net and Android will send every lookup over DoT.

Published as RFC 7858 in 2016, two years before DoH. Using its own port makes DoT easy for network administrators to identify and allow or block, the main practical difference from DoH. Both protect only the path to the resolver. The capitalized DOT usually means a department of transportation, an unrelated meaning.

5. Department of Transportation tire identification number

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Code molded on a tire's sidewall beginning with "DOT," certifying that it meets US safety standards and identifying the factory, size and production date. The last four digits give the week and year, so 2324 means the 23rd week of 2024.

Example: Check the DOT code before buying used tires; anything more than six years old is risky.

Many tire makers and safety groups recommend replacing tires after six to ten years regardless of tread, because rubber deteriorates. Recalls are traced through the code. In general use, DOT refers to the US Department of Transportation itself or to state transportation departments.

6. Polkadot

Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations

The native token of Polkadot, a multichain network that connects specialized blockchains, called parachains, to a central relay chain that shares security among them. DOT is used for staking, governance and acquiring network capacity.

Example: The project locked DOT to secure its parachain slot for two years.

Polkadot was founded by Gavin Wood, an Ethereum co-founder and creator of its Solidity language, through the Web3 Foundation, and its mainnet launched in 2020. On-chain governance gives holders votes on upgrades and treasury spending. In US government usage DOT means the Department of Transportation.
