DPF stands for Diesel particulate filter, an automotive abbreviation.
Ceramic filter in a diesel exhaust system that traps soot particles, then burns them off during "regeneration" at high temperature. DPFs cut particulate emissions by more than 90 percent.
Example: Short trips around town kept the DPF from regenerating, so the warning light came on.
Usage notes
Required on most new diesel cars in Europe since the Euro 5 standard and on US diesel trucks since 2007. Vehicles driven mostly on short trips may need a long highway run or a forced regeneration at a shop. Selling or installing "DPF delete" kits has led to large US EPA fines.
