1. Basic Allowance for Subsistence
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Monthly tax-free allowance intended to pay for a service member's meals, with separate rates for officers and enlisted members adjusted each year in line with food costs.
Example: Junior soldiers on a meal card see most of their BAS go toward meals at the dining facility.
Enlisted members on a meal card have the allowance applied to dining facility meals rather than paid in cash. BAS is meant to feed the member only, not family members. In field medicine, BAS also means battalion aid station.
2. Bachelor of Applied Science
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Bachelor's degree designed to accept technical associate credits, especially the AAS, and add upper-division management, communication and general education courses. Community colleges in Washington, Florida and Texas now award BAS degrees in fields such as IT management, cybersecurity and dental hygiene.
Example: Her BAS in supervision and management built directly on a dental hygiene AAS.
Also written B.A.S. In Canada the similar-looking BASc (Bachelor of Applied Science) means something different: it is the main engineering degree at universities such as Toronto and Waterloo. Some Texas universities use the related title Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS).
3. Battalion aid station
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
First medical treatment facility for a battalion, staffed by a physician or physician assistant and medics, where casualties are stabilized before evacuation to surgical care.
Example: The wounded Marine was stabilized at the BAS and flown to the surgical company.
The BAS provides Role 1 care in military medical doctrine, the most forward level. In Marine units it is staffed by Navy corpsmen and doctors. In pay usage, BAS means Basic Allowance for Subsistence.
4. Bile acid sequestrant
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Resins that bind bile acids in the gut, forcing the liver to use cholesterol to make more: cholestyramine, colestipol and colesevelam. They lower LDL cholesterol and are also used for bile acid diarrhea and itching from liver disease.
Example: BAS cholestyramine 4 g BID; take other meds 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after.
Because sequestrants bind many other drugs, including levothyroxine, warfarin and fat-soluble vitamins, timing is critical. Cholestyramine is also used to speed elimination of leflunomide and to treat bile acid diarrhea after gallbladder removal. Colesevelam additionally lowers blood glucose modestly.
