1. Advance shipping notice

Electronic message a supplier sends to a customer before a shipment arrives, listing what is being shipped, in which cartons or pallets, with carrier and tracking details, so the receiving warehouse can plan labor and receive goods quickly.
Example: Retailer compliance rules fine us when the ASN doesn't match the cartons on the truck.
In the ANSI X12 EDI standard the ASN is transaction set 856, often just called "the 856." Large retailers charge suppliers "chargebacks" for late, missing or inaccurate ASNs. Also expanded as advance ship notice.
2. Associate of Science in Nursing

Two-year nursing degree offered mostly by community colleges that qualifies graduates to take the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. It is one of the associate-level routes to becoming a registered nurse and is often grouped with the ADN.
Example: After finishing her ASN, she passed the NCLEX-RN and started on a medical-surgical unit.
ASN and ADN describe the same level of preparation; the name depends on the college. Hospitals with Magnet designation often prefer or require a BSN, so many ASN nurses enroll in RN-to-BSN bridge programs, which can be completed online in about a year while working.
3. Autonomous system number

A unique number identifying an autonomous system, meaning a network under one administrative control with its own routing policy, in BGP routing. ISPs, cloud providers, universities and large companies each hold an ASN so they can exchange routes with other networks.
Example: Cloudflare's ASN is 13335, so reject any announcement of our prefixes from another origin.
Originally 16-bit, allowing about 65,000 numbers; RFC 4893 (2007) introduced 32-bit ASNs. Numbers are assigned by regional internet registries such as ARIN and RIPE NCC, and the range 64512 to 65534 is reserved for private use. Lookup tools show which ASN announces a given IP address, which helps identify hosting providers. ASN.1, a data notation used in certificates, is unrelated.
