BaaS stands for Backend as a service, a cloud computing abbreviation.
A cloud service that supplies ready-made backend features for web and mobile apps, such as authentication, databases, file storage and push notifications, through SDKs and APIs, so developers can skip building a server. Firebase and Supabase are examples.
Example: The prototype uses a BaaS for sign-in and data, so the team only wrote front-end code.
Usage notes
Parse, bought by Facebook in 2013 and shut down in 2017, was an early leader; Google's Firebase, acquired in 2014, became the best known. Supabase offers an open-source alternative built on PostgreSQL. In finance, BaaS means banking as a service, which lets non-banks offer financial products.
