CategoriesGovernment & Politics

AUMF stands for Authorization for Use of Military Force, a US law abbreviation also used in the military.

Joint resolution in which Congress authorizes military action. The best known, passed on September 14, 2001, authorizes force against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks and has been used as the legal basis for operations against al-Qaeda, the Taliban and later ISIS.

Example: Lawmakers debated whether the 2001 AUMF covered strikes against the new militant group.

Usage notes

The 2001 AUMF passed with only one dissenting vote, from Representative Barbara Lee. A separate 2002 AUMF authorized the Iraq War. Critics in both parties argue that relying on the 2001 resolution for groups that did not exist in 2001 stretches its text, and repeal or replacement proposals recur regularly.
