1. Australian dollar

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Australia's currency, issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia and also used in Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu. It is divided into 100 cents and nicknamed the "Aussie" in forex markets.

Example: The Sydney-to-Melbourne flight costs AUD 149 one way.

Australia switched from the pound to the dollar on 14 February 1966 and in 1988 issued the world's first polymer banknote. Because the country exports iron ore, coal and gas, the AUD is treated as a commodity currency that often moves with Chinese demand. One- and two-cent coins were withdrawn in 1992, so cash totals round to five cents.

2. Alcohol use disorder

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Substance use disorder involving a problematic pattern of drinking, such as drinking more than intended, failed attempts to cut down, craving, continued use despite harm, tolerance and withdrawal. Effective medications include naltrexone, acamprosate and disulfiram, alongside counseling and mutual-help groups.

Example: Moderate AUD, 5 criteria met, AUDIT 22; start naltrexone 50 mg daily and refer to counseling.

AUD replaced the DSM-IV terms alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. FDA-approved medications are badly underused: only a small fraction of people with AUD receive them. Gabapentin and topiramate are used off-label. In finance AUD is the currency code for the Australian dollar.

3. Doctor of Audiology (AuD)

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations · also used in medicine

Four-year clinical doctorate that is the entry-level degree for audiologists, who diagnose hearing loss and balance disorders and fit hearing aids and cochlear implants. Programs end with a full-time clinical externship in the final year.

Example: Our AuD audiologists provide hearing evaluations, tinnitus management and hearing aid fittings.

Written Au.D. Since 2012, applicants for ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) have needed a doctoral degree, closing the master's route. Audiologists use the title Dr. but are not physicians; ear surgery is performed by otolaryngologists, commonly called ENTs.
