AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format, a file format abbreviation.
Image format that stores pictures compressed with the royalty-free AV1 video codec, offering smaller files than JPEG and WebP at similar quality, plus HDR, wide color and transparency.
Example: Our CDN serves AVIF to supporting browsers and falls back to JPEG for the rest.
Usage notes
The Alliance for Open Media released the AVIF specification in 2019. Chrome supported it from 2020, Firefox from 2021 and Safari from 2022. Encoding AVIF is slower than JPEG or WebP, which matters for sites processing many uploads. Netflix was an early adopter for artwork thumbnails. Pronounced "AY-vif".
