1. High dynamic range
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Video and display technology that shows a much wider range between the darkest and brightest parts of a picture, with brighter highlights, deeper shadows and more vivid colors than standard video. Formats include HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG.
Example: The movie looks dull on the old TV, but in HDR the sunset is dazzling.
Good HDR needs a bright display, often 1,000 nits or more in highlights, plus deep blacks; budget TVs that accept HDR signals but cannot display them well are criticized for "fake HDR". VESA's DisplayHDR program, launched in 2017, certifies monitors at levels such as DisplayHDR 400 and 1000. In photography, HDR instead means merging several exposures into one image.
2. Homology-directed repair
Science & Engineering · Genetics Abbreviations
DNA repair pathway that fixes a double-strand break by copying a matching template, such as a sister chromatid or a donor DNA supplied by researchers. In genome editing, HDR enables precise insertions and corrections rather than random small mutations.
Example: A donor template with 50-base homology arms was used to insert the tag by HDR.
HDR is active mainly in the S and G2 phases of the cell cycle, so it is inefficient in non-dividing cells, a challenge for therapeutic editing. Strategies to favor HDR over NHEJ include timing editing to the cell cycle and inhibiting NHEJ proteins. Homologous recombination (HR) is the natural process behind it.
