1. Advanced Video Coding
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
MPEG name for the H.264 video compression standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), the dominant codec for HD video on the web, Blu-ray discs, broadcast and video calling. Both names refer to the same technology.
Example: The camera records 4K in AVC or HEVC; AVC files are larger but easier to edit.
The dual naming reflects joint development by the ITU-T (H.264) and ISO/IEC MPEG (AVC). AVCHD, a separate format launched by Sony and Panasonic in 2006, uses AVC video for consumer camcorders. AVC is far more efficient than MPEG-2 but needs roughly twice the bit rate of HEVC for similar quality.
2. Average variable cost
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Variable costs, such as materials and hourly labor, divided by the number of units produced. In the short run, a firm should keep operating as long as price covers AVC, even if it does not cover total cost.
Example: With the market price below AVC, the mine shut down rather than lose money on every ton.
The point where price equals minimum AVC is called the shutdown point. AVC excludes fixed costs such as rent or equipment leases, which must be paid whether or not the firm produces. The gap between ATC and AVC is average fixed cost.
