WebP stands for WebP image format, a file format abbreviation.
Image format developed by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, producing files typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than comparable JPEGs. Websites use it to load faster.
Example: The site converts uploaded photos to WebP automatically, which cut page weight by a third.
Usage notes
Google announced WebP in 2010, basing its lossy mode on the VP8 video codec acquired with On2 Technologies. Safari added support in 2020, making it usable across all major browsers. A serious flaw in the libwebp library (CVE-2023-4863) was exploited in the wild in 2023, forcing emergency updates to browsers and apps. Pronounced "weppy" by many developers.
