AFQT stands for Armed Forces Qualification Test, a standardized test abbreviation also used in the military.
Percentile score from 1 to 99, derived from four ASVAB subtests (arithmetic reasoning, mathematics knowledge, word knowledge and paragraph comprehension), that determines whether a person can enlist in the US military. Each branch sets its own minimum, and scores are grouped into categories I through V.
Example: With an AFQT of 65, she qualified for an enlistment bonus in the Navy.
Usage notes
Federal law bars enlistment of applicants who score in Category V (below the 10th percentile), and the Department of Defense limits the share of recruits from Category IV. Percentiles compare recruits with a 1997 national sample of young adults, so a score of 50 means average performance in that reference group.
