WebM stands for WebM video format, a file format abbreviation.
Open, royalty-free media format developed by Google for web video, using VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio in a container based on Matroska. All major browsers play it.
Example: Upload the clip as WebM with VP9 to keep the file small without losing quality.
Usage notes
Google launched WebM in 2010 after acquiring the codec company On2 Technologies, aiming to offer a patent-free alternative to H.264. YouTube serves much of its video as WebM to supporting browsers. Animated "GIFs" on some websites are actually silent WebM or MP4 clips. Safari added WebM support gradually from 2020 onward.
