XLSX stands for Office Open XML spreadsheet, a file format abbreviation.
Default Excel workbook format since Office 2007, storing data, formulas, formatting and charts as compressed XML. Each sheet can hold 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, the last being column XFD.
Example: Download the sales report as an XLSX so the formulas and formatting stay intact.
Usage notes
XLSX is part of the Office Open XML standard. Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers open it, though complex macros and pivot charts may not convert perfectly. Macro-enabled workbooks must use .xlsm, and the binary .xlsb format offers faster loading for very large files. Data scientists read XLSX with libraries such as pandas and openpyxl.
