VP9 stands for Video Processor 9, a file format abbreviation.
Royalty-free video codec released by Google in 2013, used by YouTube for much of its HD and 4K video and by WebRTC video calls. It offers efficiency similar to HEVC without patent royalties.
Example: YouTube switched the stream to VP9 when I picked 4K in Chrome.
Usage notes
VP9 descends from the VP series created by On2 Technologies, which Google bought in 2010; the letters are a product name rather than an official acronym. Hardware decoders became common in TVs, phones and GPUs in the late 2010s. AV1, its successor, incorporates many VP9 ideas. Videos usually sit in WebM or MP4 containers.
