1. Vertebral compression fracture
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Collapse of a vertebral body, most often from osteoporosis, sometimes after minimal trauma such as bending or coughing. Many cause no symptoms and are found incidentally, while others cause sudden back pain, height loss and a stooped posture.
Example: New T12 VCF with 30 percent height loss, no retropulsion; brace for comfort, start osteoporosis treatment.
One osteoporotic vertebral fracture greatly increases the risk of another. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, which inject cement into the bone, remain debated after sham-controlled trials published in 2009 found little benefit over placebo for vertebroplasty. Malignancy should be considered when fractures occur above T5 or without osteoporosis.
2. Virtual Contact File (vCard)
Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations
Standard file format for electronic business cards, storing names, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses and photos, used to share and import contacts between phones, email programs and address books.
Example: Export all your contacts as a VCF and import it into the new phone.
The vCard format was created by the Versit Consortium in 1995 and is now maintained by the IETF; vCard 4.0 is defined in RFC 6350 (2011). QR codes on business cards often encode vCard data. A single VCF file can contain many contacts. In genomics, VCF instead means Variant Call Format.
