WARN Act stands for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, a US law abbreviation.
Law of 1988 requiring employers with 100 or more employees to give 60 days' written notice before a plant closing or mass layoff affecting at least 50 workers at a single site. Employees who do not get proper notice can recover back pay and benefits for the violation period.
Example: The company filed WARN Act notices for 450 workers at its distribution center.
Usage notes
Exceptions exist for unforeseeable business circumstances, natural disasters and faltering companies seeking new capital. Many states have their own "mini-WARN" laws with lower thresholds or longer notice, such as New York's 90-day requirement. WARN notices filed with state agencies are often the first public sign of large layoffs.
