1. Clean Air Act

Government & Politics · US Law Abbreviations

Principal federal air pollution law, directing the EPA to set national ambient air quality standards for common pollutants, regulate emissions from vehicles, power plants and factories, and phase out ozone-depleting chemicals. States carry out much of it through implementation plans.

Example: The refinery's permit sets emission limits required by the CAA.

An initial version passed in 1963, but the 1970 amendments signed by Richard Nixon created the modern program; major amendments in 1990 added the acid rain trading system. In Massachusetts v. EPA (2007), the Supreme Court held that greenhouse gases are air pollutants under the act, while West Virginia v. EPA (2022) limited power-plant rules.

2. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Deposition of amyloid protein in the walls of small arteries of the brain's surface and cortex, making them fragile. It is a leading cause of lobar brain hemorrhages in older adults and also causes microbleeds, superficial siderosis and transient neurological episodes.

Example: MRI shows multiple lobar microbleeds and cortical superficial siderosis; probable CAA, avoid antithrombotics if possible.

Diagnosis uses the Boston criteria, revised as version 2.0 in 2022, based on MRI findings in patients aged 50 or older. CAA raises the risk of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), brain swelling or bleeding, with anti-amyloid Alzheimer's antibodies such as lecanemab and donanemab. Transient focal episodes, nicknamed "amyloid spells," can mimic TIA.
