VUR stands for Vesicoureteral reflux, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Backward flow of urine from the bladder into the ureters and sometimes the kidneys, usually from a congenital defect at the ureterovesical junction. Children with VUR are prone to febrile urinary tract infections and kidney scarring; many outgrow mild reflux.
Example: Grade IV bilateral VUR after second febrile UTI; discuss antibiotic prophylaxis versus endoscopic injection.
Usage notes
Reflux is graded I to V on a voiding cystourethrogram. The RIVUR trial (2014) showed that daily antibiotic prophylaxis roughly halved recurrent infections in children with reflux. Treatments include observation, prophylaxis, endoscopic bulking injections and ureteral reimplantation. It tends to run in families.
