CAPD stands for Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Manual form of peritoneal dialysis in which patients perform about four exchanges a day, each with a dwell of several hours, without a machine. It suits people who want freedom from equipment during the night and can manage daytime bag changes.
Example: CAPD four exchanges daily of 2 L, 1.5 percent dextrose; good ultrafiltration.
Usage notes
The technique was introduced by Popovich and Moncrief in the mid-1970s and transformed home dialysis. Each exchange takes roughly 30 minutes. Glucose concentration in the bags (for example 1.5, 2.5 or 4.25 percent dextrose) controls how much fluid is removed. Icodextrin is often used for the long overnight dwell.
