CategoriesMedical

BOO stands for Bladder outlet obstruction, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Blockage to urine flow at the bladder neck or urethra, most commonly from benign prostatic enlargement in men, and from urethral stricture, pelvic prolapse or prior surgery in women. It is confirmed by pressure-flow urodynamics showing high bladder pressure with low flow.

Example: Pressure-flow study: BOO index 62, consistent with obstruction; proceed with outlet procedure.

Usage notes

Long-standing obstruction can thicken and weaken the bladder muscle, leading to retention. The Bladder Outlet Obstruction Index (BOOI) quantifies the degree of obstruction in men. Pronounced as letters to avoid confusion with the word "boo".
