1. Automated peritoneal dialysis
Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations
Peritoneal dialysis performed by a machine called a cycler, which makes several exchanges overnight while the patient sleeps, sometimes with a daytime dwell. It leaves the day mostly free and is now the most common PD modality in many countries.
Example: Switched from CAPD to APD for work schedule: 5 cycles over 9 hours, last fill 1.5 L.
Variants include continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) and nocturnal intermittent PD (NIPD). Remote monitoring lets cyclers send treatment data to the dialysis team. In ophthalmology APD means afferent pupillary defect, so the setting identifies the meaning.
2. Assistant public defender
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Staff attorney in a public defender's office who represents indigent clients from arraignment through trial, sentencing and sometimes appeal. APDs are typically assigned to particular courtrooms, divisions or case types and carry large caseloads.
Example: The APD requested a competency evaluation before her client entered any plea.
Outside the courthouse APD usually names a city police department, such as the Austin or Atlanta Police Department. Some offices title their lawyers deputy public defenders instead. The head of the office is the Public Defender, who may be elected (as in Florida) or appointed.
