ADPKD stands for Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Most common inherited kidney disease, caused by mutations in PKD1 or PKD2, affecting about 1 in 400 to 1,000 people. Kidneys enlarge with cysts over decades; symptoms include flank pain, hematuria, kidney stones and hypertension, and about half of patients reach kidney failure by around age 60.
Example: ADPKD, Mayo class 1D, total kidney volume rising; start tolvaptan with monthly LFT monitoring.
Usage notes
Tolvaptan, a vasopressin receptor blocker approved in the US in 2018, slows kidney growth in rapidly progressing disease but requires liver monitoring. PKD1 mutations cause earlier and more severe disease than PKD2. Screening for intracranial aneurysms is offered to patients with a family history of aneurysm or hemorrhage.
