BPH stands for Benign prostatic hyperplasia, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly develops with age and can compress the urethra, causing weak stream, frequency, nighttime urination and urinary retention. Treatments range from watchful waiting and alpha blockers to 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and surgery.
Example: BPH with 55 g prostate, IPSS 19; start tamsulosin and add finasteride if no improvement.
Usage notes
Autopsy studies show prostate hyperplasia in about half of men in their 50s and up to 90 percent of men over 80. BPH does not turn into prostate cancer, although both can coexist and both can raise PSA. Finasteride and dutasteride roughly halve PSA values, which must be accounted for when screening. Also called benign prostatic enlargement (BPE).
