1. Voting Rights Act of 1965

Government & Politics · US Law Abbreviations

Law that bans racial discrimination in voting, including literacy tests, and lets voters challenge election rules and district maps that dilute minority voting strength under Section 2. Section 5 required certain jurisdictions to get federal approval, called preclearance, before changing voting rules.

Example: Plaintiffs argued the new congressional map violated Section 2 of the VRA.

President Lyndon Johnson signed it on August 6, 1965, months after the march from Selma to Montgomery. In Shelby County v. Holder (2013) the Supreme Court struck down the formula that determined which jurisdictions needed preclearance, effectively ending it. Allen v. Milligan (2023) upheld Section 2 in a redistricting case from Alabama.

2. Veterans Recruitment Appointment

Military · Veteran Abbreviations

Special federal hiring authority that lets agencies appoint eligible veterans to positions up to the GS-11 level without competitive examination. It speeds federal hiring for recently separated and disabled veterans.

Example: The agency hired him under the VRA after his Army service.

VRA appointees typically convert to career status after two years of satisfactory service. It is one of several veterans' preference tools in federal hiring, alongside veterans' preference points. Eligibility depends on separation date and disability status.
