1. TikTok

Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations

Shorthand for TikTok, the short-video platform owned by ByteDance, used in comments, captions and conversation ("saw it on TT"). Less common than the full name but widely recognized by younger users.

Example: Saw the baked feta recipe on TT and had to try it tonight.

TikTok launched internationally in 2017 and absorbed the lip-sync app Musical.ly in 2018. TT also abbreviates "table tennis" and "time trial" in sports, so context matters.

2. Tenure-track

Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations

Faculty position that carries eligibility for tenure after a probationary period, usually about six years, culminating in a review of research, teaching and service. Assistant professors on the tenure track who succeed are promoted to associate professor with tenure.

Example: She accepted a TT assistant professor job and will go up for tenure in 2031.

The AAUP's 1940 Statement of Principles set the norm that probation should not exceed seven years. Universities may pause the tenure clock for parental leave or extraordinary events such as the pandemic. Job postings often say "TT" to distinguish from visiting or lecturer jobs.

3. Thrombin time

Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations

Measures how long plasma takes to clot after thrombin is added, testing only the final step of coagulation: conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. It is prolonged by heparin, the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran, low or abnormal fibrinogen and high levels of fibrin degradation products.

Example: Normal TT excludes significant dabigatran effect before emergency surgery.

Because the thrombin time is extremely sensitive to dabigatran, a normal result essentially rules out a clinically relevant level, while a prolonged result cannot quantify it; a dilute thrombin time or ecarin-based assay is used for that. Labs may add a reptilase time, which heparin does not affect, to separate heparin contamination from a fibrinogen problem.

4. Trinidad and Tobago

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Twin-island Caribbean nation off Venezuela with Port of Spain as its capital and TTO as its alpha-3 code. The steelpan was invented there in the 20th century, and Carnival is its biggest festival.

Example: Carnival costume bands in TT start preparations months in advance.

Oil and natural gas have made it one of the wealthiest Caribbean countries. The language code tt is Tatar.

5. To taste

Units & Measurements · Cooking Abbreviations

Culinary-school formulas, restaurant recipes and prep sheets use TT for seasoning amounts left to the cook's judgment, typically salt, pepper, acid or hot sauce. It means adjust after tasting rather than measure.

Example: Finish the soup with lemon juice and kosher salt TT just before service.

Home recipes usually spell out "to taste" or write "salt and pepper, to taste". Scaled recipes often list a starting amount even when the final seasoning is TT, because seasoning does not scale linearly with batch size. The same idea appears in Latin form as q.s. in pastry and pharmacy formulas.

6. Telegraphic transfer

Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations

Term, common in Asia, the Middle East, Australia and the UK, for an international electronic wire transfer between banks, typically sent over the SWIFT network. The name dates from when such transfers were sent by telegraph.

Example: The supplier requires a 30 percent TT deposit with the order and the balance before shipment.

In trade, "T/T" payment terms are an alternative to letters of credit: cheaper, but with less protection for the buyer. Bank fees and exchange-rate margins apply. In the US the same service is simply called a wire transfer.
