SRAM stands for Static random-access memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Fast memory that holds each bit in a circuit of several transistors, typically six, and needs no refreshing while powered. It is used for processor caches and registers because it is much faster than DRAM, though far less dense and more expensive.
Example: The CPU's 96 MB of L3 cache is SRAM stacked on top of the compute die.
Usage notes
AMD's 3D V-Cache, first sold in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in 2022, stacks an extra SRAM die on the processor to enlarge its cache, which especially benefits games. SRAM has scaled poorly with recent manufacturing nodes, so cache takes up a growing share of chip area. Like DRAM, it loses data when power is removed.
