1. Standard temperature and pressure

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Reference conditions for reporting gas volumes and properties. Since 1982 IUPAC has defined STP as 0 °C (273.15 K) and 100 kPa (1 bar), at which one mole of ideal gas occupies about 22.7 liters; many textbooks still use the older 1 atm definition, giving 22.4 liters.

Example: At STP, 2.0 g of hydrogen gas occupies roughly 22.7 liters.

Organizations define standard conditions differently, so a value labeled STP should state which definition is used. The 22.4 L/mol figure many students memorize applies to the pre-1982 definition at 1 atm. STP should not be confused with SATP or RTP, which use 25 °C or 20 °C.

2. Shielded twisted pair

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

Twisted-pair network cable wrapped in foil or braided metal shielding that protects signals from electromagnetic interference. It is chosen near motors, radio transmitters and heavy machinery, and for some high-speed Ethernet runs.

Example: The factory floor requires STP because the welding robots generate heavy interference.

Cable jackets use codes such as F/UTP, U/FTP and S/FTP to show whether the shield surrounds the whole cable, each pair, or both. Shielding works only when it is properly grounded at the ends. In switching, STP usually means Spanning Tree Protocol instead; talk of jackets, interference and cable categories points to this meaning.

3. Spanning Tree Protocol

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

A layer 2 protocol that stops Ethernet switches from forming broadcast loops when redundant links connect them. Switches elect a root bridge and block selected ports, leaving a loop-free tree that reactivates backup links if an active link fails.

Example: Someone plugged both ends of a cable into the same switch, and STP blocked the port before the network melted down.

Invented by Radia Perlman at DEC in 1985 and standardized as IEEE 802.1D. Classic STP can take 30 to 50 seconds to converge, so Rapid Spanning Tree (RSTP, IEEE 802.1w) is now the usual choice. Perlman described the algorithm in a short poem called "Algorhyme". In cabling, STP instead means shielded twisted pair; mentions of switches, ports and loops point to the protocol.

4. Segmentation, targeting and positioning

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

Three-step marketing strategy model: divide a market into groups with similar needs, choose which segments to serve, and define how the brand should be perceived relative to competitors in those segments.

Example: Our STP work showed busy parents were a bigger opportunity than fitness enthusiasts.

A staple of marketing textbooks, notably Philip Kotler's. Positioning was popularized by Al Ries and Jack Trout's 1981 book "Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind."
