SSH stands for Secure Shell, a networking abbreviation.

Encrypted protocol for logging in to remote computers, running commands and tunneling other traffic, normally on TCP port 22. System administrators use it to manage Linux servers, network devices and cloud instances, and developers use it to push code to Git hosts.

Example: SSH into the staging box and check the disk usage before the deploy.

Usage notes

Created by Finnish researcher Tatu Ylönen in 1995 after a password-sniffing attack on his university network, as a replacement for Telnet, rlogin and rsh. SSH-2, standardized in 2006 (RFCs 4251 to 4254), is the version in use today, and OpenSSH is the most common implementation. Key-based authentication with a public and private key pair is preferred over passwords. Often used as a verb, as in "ssh into the server".
