TFTP stands for Trivial File Transfer Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
A minimal file transfer protocol running over UDP port 69, with no authentication, directory listing or encryption. Network devices use it to load firmware and configuration files, and computers use it during PXE network booting.
Example: Copy the startup config from the switch to the TFTP server before upgrading the firmware.
Usage notes
The current specification is RFC 1350 (1992), based on work from 1981. Its simplicity lets it fit into boot ROMs with very little code. Because anyone who can reach a TFTP server can read or write files, it should only be exposed on trusted management networks.
