1. Room temperature and pressure
Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations
Informal reference conditions, usually 20 or 25 °C and 1 atmosphere, used in school chemistry for gas calculations. At RTP one mole of gas occupies about 24 liters, a figure printed on many British exam data sheets.
Example: Calculate the volume of carbon dioxide produced at RTP when 10 g of calcium carbonate reacts.
There is no single official definition: UK GCSE and A-level courses use 24.0 dm3 per mole, corresponding to about 20 °C, while 25 °C gives about 24.5 liters. Research papers more often write rt or RT (room temperature), and precise work states the actual temperature.
2. Roughing the passer
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Fifteen-yard personal foul for hitting a quarterback late, low, high or with excessive force after he has thrown the ball. It carries an automatic first down and is among the most debated calls in the NFL.
Example: The RTP call on third down kept the drive alive and drew boos from the home crowd.
Quarterback protections were tightened after injuries to stars, including the 2009 "Brady rule" against low hits on a passer in the pocket. Defenders also may not land on a quarterback with their full body weight. The call is not reviewable under standard replay rules.
3. Real-Time Payments
Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations
US instant payment network launched in 2017 by The Clearing House that lets participating banks send and settle payments within seconds, 24 hours a day, with immediate confirmation. Payments are final and cannot be reversed by the sender.
Example: The insurer pays approved claims over RTP, so policyholders see the money within seconds.
RTP was described as the first new US core payment system in more than 40 years. The Federal Reserve launched a separate instant payment service, FedNow, in 2023. RTP's per-transaction limit has been raised several times since launch.
