IUPAC stands for International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, a chemistry abbreviation.

World authority on chemical nomenclature, symbols, terminology and atomic weights, founded in 1919. IUPAC approves names and symbols for new elements, publishes the rules for naming compounds and maintains standard atomic weights, so a name like 2-methylpropane means the same thing in every country.

Example: Give the IUPAC name for the compound commonly known as isobutane.

Usage notes

Usually pronounced "eye-you-pack." IUPAC is a federation of national chemistry organizations, legally registered in Zurich, Switzerland, with its secretariat in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Its recommendations are published in color-coded books: the Blue Book covers organic nomenclature, the Red Book inorganic, and the Gold Book general terminology.
